Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about customs clearance in Ireland
What is the Automated Import System (AIS)?
AIS is Revenue's electronic system for submitting import declarations into Ireland. It replaced the older AEP (Automated Entry Processing) system and is fully aligned with the EU's Union Customs Code. Every consignment imported into Ireland from outside the EU must be declared on AIS.
What is AES and when do I need it?
AES (Automated Export System) is Revenue's system for export declarations. If you are exporting goods from Ireland to any destination outside the European Union — including Great Britain — you need an AES declaration.
Do I need a customs agent?
You can submit declarations yourself if you are EORI-registered and have access to ROS and approved customs software. However, most Irish importers and exporters use a customs agent to ensure accuracy, avoid costly Revenue queries, and save administrative time. We handle the entire process on your behalf.
How long does customs clearance take in Ireland?
For pre-lodged declarations submitted before goods arrive, clearance is usually granted within minutes if your shipment is routed green. Orange routing (documentary check) typically takes a few hours, and red routing (physical inspection) can take longer. We aim to submit declarations early so your goods move quickly.
What is an EORI number and do I need one?
An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a unique ID required for any business or individual importing or exporting goods to or from Ireland. It is issued by Revenue and links to your VAT registration. Without an EORI, your shipment cannot be cleared.
What is Postponed Accounting for VAT?
Postponed Accounting allows VAT-registered Irish importers to account for import VAT in their VAT3 return rather than paying it upfront at the border. This significantly improves cash flow. We set up Postponed Accounting on every eligible AIS declaration we lodge.
Can you clear goods at Dublin Port and Rosslare?
Yes. We process declarations for all Irish gateways including Dublin Port, Rosslare Europort, Cork, Shannon Foynes, Dublin Airport and Cork Airport. Declarations are submitted electronically to Revenue regardless of the port of entry.
Do you handle goods from Turkey?
Yes. We specialise in helping Turkish businesses and individuals import goods into Ireland. We provide full bilingual support in English and Turkish throughout the clearance process, including assistance with A.TR movement certificates and Customs Union benefits where applicable.
